he notion to conduct a "Fuel and Lube" roundtable started innocently, the way in which a thousand great stories are launched: at a cocktail reception in Oslo! Earlier this summer while attending the Norshipping 2009 exhibition, I had the opportunity to spend quality time with a number of key players working in and around the global marine industry, and more so than ever the topics of emission reduction, environmental footprint, efficiency of operation and, most critically -- cost reduction -- were central to nearly every conversation. The varied and countless conversations, presentations and soapbox preaching in this case, however, transcended the the notion that "being green" is more than a necessary marketing slogan. Simply put, the business of taking people and cargo to and fro on the world's waterways -- whether inland, lake or ocean -- is going to face increasingly harsh regulations and penalties regarding emissions into the air and water. At said cocktail reception, I was engaged in an interesting discussion with some colleagues from a leading oil major, who were quite passionate about the business of assisting vessel owners to tackle the looming challenges. With that came more questions, and more participants, and starting on page 31 you can read technical and market insights from a few of the world's leading suppliers of fuels and lubes to the marine market.
