Young Seafarers' Focus Group
INTERTANKO and the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) recently organized in London a Workshop for young seafarers to express their views on their career and life at sea, and on what attracts young
people to the shipping industry and retains them there. The Young Seafarers' Focus Group consisted of 20 volunteers of seven different nationalities drawn from the membership of both associations. The fundamental concept of the Workshop was to draw on their thoughts, to solicit
their comments, their views and concerns, and their recommendations as a collective group, without influence from INTERTANKO or ITF. Their initial findings were discussed directly by them with heads of industry and then presented in person to the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). We believe that these findings will provide additional stimulus within the industry to address attraction and retention issues.

Crowley Receives New Alaska Tug
The vessel construction boom at Crowley continued as the company took delivery of the Nachik, a newlydesigned shallow draft tug, from Diversified Marine in Portland, Ore. The Nachik, which means "hair seal" in the native Inupiaq language, will be deployed in Alaska and is the third new vessel to be handed off to Crowley in less than two weeks. The company took delivery of the articulated tug-barge (ATB) Commitment and 650-6 in Pascagoula, Miss., and on March 28 Crowley christened and launched the 455-4, a heavy-lift series deck barge, at Gunderson Marine in Portland. Crowley's Alaska shallow draft tugs are designed to operate in Alaska's rivers and coastal regions where operations are challenging due to restricted drafts and a lack of docking infrastructure. These boats are outfitted for both barge handling and ocean towing service. Designed with raised pilothouses, the 1,362 hp tugs are equipped to safely maneuver fuel/freight barges throughout the state.
