EDITOR'S NOTE
When Old is New
ith all of the references today comparing the current economic malaise to the Great Depression of the 1930s, it seems appropriate that this edition is packed with a similar theme. Let's start with the cover. Modern maritime training and education facilities sport some of the highest technology electronics and simulation hardware and software available, a rapidly evolving end of the market which seeks to train mariners more effectively and efficiently using increasingly "real" scenarios situated far from the water. But standing atop our March 2009 cover is an image from the Seaman's Church Institute nearly 100 years ago. SCI, which is celebrating its 175th anniversary, in 1914 had constructed a ship's bridge on the roof of the building of 25 South Street, advertised as the "highest navigation bridge in the world." The marine industry -- particularly those industry leading companies that invest in this industry for the long-term -- traditionally has had a strong dedication to the training and education of its mariners, a trend which has grown exponentially in recent years as an increasingly litigious and regulated industry demands that those entrusted with the world's ships and boats are prepared to the best of their ability. Continuing with the `old is new' theme is an article that we present on Webb Institute, one of the nation's most prestigious naval architecture and marine engineering programs. Webb Institute is the Glen Cove, NY-based institution founded by William Webb, described as "... one of, if not the first master shipbuilder, to combine the art of design with the discipline of careful calculation ..." I had the privilege of visiting with RADM Robert C. Olsen, Jr. late last year, Webb's leader for the past three years and its steward in ushering in the next generation of maritime leaders. While Webb is indeed steeped in the traditions upon which it was founded, it was refreshing to see the ways in which the school is adapting to deliver not just the finest naval architects and marine engineers, rather the highest-caliber leaders that will drive, shape and build the U.S. marine industry for the generation to come.
