Dear Editor, Your December Maritime Reporter featuring 'Great Ships of 2008' rightfully listed on the cover the Austal USAbuilt Hawaii Superferry "ALAKAI" as "Blazing a Path". Germanischer Lloyd, as the chosen Class for this vessel, and as Class leader in High Speed Ferry classification, was unfortunately omitted from your article. We are also Classing her sister, presently under construction at Austal USA. Since 2003, GL has been in close support with Austal USA and Hawaii Superferry, through their concept, design, construction and operation of the "most technically advanced" ferry ever built in the United States. Your article further refers to the "who's who list of top-of-the-line marine equipment" found on board, all of which was in fact certified to Germanischer Lloyd Rules. Furthermore, another source of pride we hold is our working relationship with the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Center, USCG Mobile and USCG Honolulu from beginning to end, a satisfying effort in teamwork to the benefit and safety of our common clients and their passengers. ABB Wins $30m in Marine Orders
ABB won orders worth $30 million for electric propulsion, power generation and power distribution systems that maximize the fuel efficiency of offshore supply vessels to be built in China. ABB will provide an integrated electric propulsion solution for each of the vessels, including generators, switchgear, transformers, drives and motors, will be delivered to the Fujian Mawei Shipyard on the southeast coast in 2010 and 2011.
