Nuclear Ship Savannah Passenger-Cargo, historic New York Shipbuilding Corp U.S., Dept of Transportation, MARAD Keystone Shipping Company (General Agent)
The World's First Nuclear-Powered Merchant Ship, and a National Historic Landmark of the United States. The Savannah remains actively licensed by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Owned and managed by the Maritime Administration, the Savannah is enjoying the first year of a four-year program commemorating its fiftieth anniversary. The signature element of President Eisenhower's visionary "Atoms for Peace" program, the Savannah satisfactorily completed every one of its objectives, and physically demonstrated the peaceful uses of nuclear power by visiting over 70 ports worldwide, and by being visited by 1.5 million people during its operating career. The Savannah's keel was laid on National Maritime Day, May 22, 1958, honoring its namesake, the SS Savannah of 1819. In 2009 the Maritime Administration will observe the fiftieth anniversary of the ship's christening by Mamie Eisenhower with ceremonies on Saturday, July 18.
