2008 USS AOTOS Awards
The United Seamen's Service (USS) 2008 Admiral of the Ocean Sea (AOTOS) Awards was presented to James A. Capo, Chairman & CEO of U.S. Maritime Alliance, Ltd., and Michael D. Garvey, a Founding Partner and Past Chairman of Saltchuk Resources, Inc. on November 7. A Special AOTOS Award was given to General Norton A. Schwartz, USAF, former Commander of the United States Transportation Command and now USAF Chief of Staff.

MARAD, ABS Sign Research Agreement
Maritime Administrator Sean T. Connaughton and Robert D. Somerville, Chairman and CEO of the American Bureau of Shipping, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to coordinate research efforts on major marine transportation environmental issues and to share information to promote the development of a vital and environmentally responsible merchant marine. ABS and the Maritime Administration have agreed to coordinate portions of their respective maritime environmental research efforts undertaken for the public good, undertake to coordinate areas of research, avoid duplication of effort, and to achieve research synergies, all to promote the development of a vital and environmentally responsible maritime industry. The products of the collaborative research conducted within the scope of this agreement will be disseminated as widely as possible to the public through the joint and separate means available to the Parties. Research efforts expected to be undertaken within the scope of this agreement will focus on maritime environmental issues such as port and vessel air emissions, invasive species associated with ballast water or hull biofouling, vessel impact on climate change and greenhouse gases, ship generated noise, environmental impact and energy efficiency use of alternative fuels in maritime settings, environmental impacts of vessel operations on the Arctic and Antarctic Oceans, and vessel waste management programs. In addition to these areas, researchers from the Maritime Administration and ABS will work together to find areas for future collaborative research. names, and, as a consequence, Aker Yards Marine Inc. will change its name to STX Canada Marine Inc. and Aker Yards Marine (US) Inc. will change its name to STX (US) Marine Inc. CWT for booked vessels (those ships holding reservations) also dropped from 17.63 hours in Q4 of FY 2007 to 17.56 hours. Steady operating efficiency accounted for the reduced CWT this quarter. While total Canal transits increased 0.6 percent during Q4 of FY 2008, from 3,374 to 3,393 transits, booked transits (excluding auctioned slots) rose 8.5 percent, from 1,884 to 2,044 transits. Panama Canal/Universal Measurement System (PC/UMS) tonnage dropped slightly by 0.4 percent, from 75.4 million PC/UMS tons in Q4 of FY 2007 to 75.1 million PC/UMS tons.

Aveva Expands in Japan
Aveva said that several Japanese shipbuilders -- Namura Shipbuilding, Universal Shipbuilding Corporation, Shin Kurushima Dockyard, Sumitomo Heavy Industries Marine & Engineering and Imabari Shipbuilding Group -- have signed contracts worth over $2.5m to extend their use of Aveva marine solutions.

Chanik Appointed
Northrop Grumman has appointed Evan 'Marty' Chanik to vice president of business development for its shipbuilding sector, responsible for all marketing, customer and government relations initiatives, reporting to Mike Petters, corporate vice president and president of Northrop Grumman's Shipbuilding. Chanik assumes his position from John Mazach, who is retiring.

Transas to Supply TORM
Transas won an order from TORM for 11 sets of Transas Navi-Sailor 4000 ECDIS MFD 23-in. Master units, with 19-in. back-up units and radar integrator board. The equipment will be installed onboard TORM newbuilds constructed in China between 2009 and 2011.
MOPS Heads to PVA
MOPS Marine License Insurance will exhibit at the Passenger Vessel Association (PVA) Annual Convention at MariTrends, scheduled to be held from January 9-12, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency in San Francisco. MOPS provides legal defense insurance and income protection to U.S. Coast Guard licensed deck and engineering officers, state and federal pilots and tankermen serving aboard every type of commercial vessel on the oceans, harbors, Great Lakes and U.S. inland waters. Hempel Acquires Hempel-Hai Hong
Hempel reached an agreement to acquire Hempel-Hai Hong in China, with completion expected to take place on January 5, 2009. This latest acquisition means that Hempel A/S will have invested nearly DKK one billion in 2008, in line with its strategy for global growth, OneHempel - Everywhere. Increasing its share in Hempel-Hai Hong from 36 percent to 100 percent will give Hempel A/S full control of its activities in China. Hempel-Hai Hong has a strong brand identity and is already responsible for 25 percent of Hempel A/S's global turnover, making it one of the leading companies in the Hempel Group.
New CFO at Dockwise
Dockwise said that Stefan Malfliet resigned as CFO by mutual agreement with the company. Claudia Mennen, Vice-President Finance, will assume the duties of finance director for an interim period. These changes are with immediate effect and the search for a new Chief Financial Officer is underway.
Spec Tec - New Cosco Dalian Contract
Following a contract for the installation of Spec Tec's AMOS Maintenance & Purchase on 11 newbuilds, Cosco Dalian has decided to continue with the installation of AMOS on 8 additional newbuild tankers in 2009 and 2010. Cosco Dalian is a fully owned subsidiary of Cosco Group, and is the only company within the Cosco Group in liquid bulk transportation, with 12 VLCCs in operation as well as 28 other Tankers. James De Vroome, EVP of SpecTec APAC, visited Cosco Dalian and participated in the signing of the contract with Mr. Zhao Jinwen, Director of Technical Department on 6th Nov.
