Training & Education GMATS Crew Advancement Placement (CAP) From the Deckplates to the Wheelhouse According to Kelly Curtin (left, center) the GMATS Crew Advancement Program, or CAP, is designed to give the working mariner, whether seasoned or entry level, a clear path to career advancement in the industry, using hands-on training, classroom instruction and simulation time. The GMATS Crew Advancement Program is designed to give the working mariner, whether seasoned or entry level, a clear path to career advancement in the industry. Mariners gain the skills and education to obtain the necessary qualifications to achieve a United States Coast Guard 500/1600 Gross Ton Mates (Officer) License. As the first class to come out of the Global Maritime & Transportation School -- or GMATS -- prepares to graduate next year, Maritime Reporter & Engineering News caught up with Kelly Curtin, Division Manager, Nautical Science Programs to discuss the program and its future. How does the GMATS (CAP) help to fill the marine industry recruitment gap? KC Recruitment is a tremendous challenge and one that doesn't have an easy solution. Human capital is extremely important to companies. The demand for skilled mariners has never been greater and the competition among companies for quality people is very high. We are seeing some employees jumping ship for other companies based upon who is paying more. However, some companies are developing ways to invest in their employees to try and build a sense of commitment and loyalty. Our (GMATS) Crew Advancement Program (CAP) is being used by some companies to not only increase their employee's professional abilities but it is also used as a motivation tool by allowing the employees to advance in their careers. Giving them an opportunity they wouldn't have had otherwise. I believe that by companies investing in their people, their people will be more likely inclined to stay invested with the company. GMATS Crew Advancement Program is designed to assist companies in their investment in their employees. Employee/Company loyalty is something which needs a strong foundation.
