RN Arkhangelsk, built by Spanish Shipyard Factorias Vulcano S.A., has been designed to navigate in extreme ice conditions of Artic seas with more than 1.0 meter thick ice. This reportedly is the first chemical tanker in the world classified with the DEICE class. To reach this class note the vessel has been provided with a sophisticated cargo heating system and equipment to prevent the ice formation and a quickly deice. The RN Arkhangelsk is an advanced prototype without comparison with the rest of chemical vessels under construction, even with other vessels for Arctic conditions, for the great size for this type of operation, for the climatic extreme conditions and for the complexity of the requirements and regulations. To face up the challenge that this new project, it has been necessary to change completely both, the criteria of design and materials systems and equipments. The main target of Factorias Vulcano, S.A., with this new product, has been to assure its position of European Shipbuilder in the market of chemical tankers. It is worthy to note also that special attention has been paid to the reduction of vibration and acoustic levels, by command of Russian flag requirements, which the shipbuilder contends are the strongest that exist. The OMI accepts 60 - 65 dB (A) while Russian requirements are of 45 dB (A) in the crew, accommodation and wheelhouse spaces. Also, the solution
for the operation of cargo pumps in different work conditions corresponds to the different cargo types, and allows the remote control of the cargo from a control station. The advantage of this vessel is an innovative, automated system that allows the discharge with automatization of discharge pumps and valves, depending on the fixed discharge pressure.
