M/T Golden State, the lead ship of the State Class Product Carriers (PC-1), is under construction at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard for U.S. Shipping Partners. The 49,000 dwt Product/Chemical Tanker is under the survey of the American Bureau of Shipping and will sail under the U.S. Flag in the Jones Act trade. The ship is named after California's state nickname. Although constructed in San Diego, Calif., Golden State has roots halfway around the world in Busan, Korea. In March 2006, NASSCO established a new business model for its commercial shipbuilding enterprise by teaming with the Korea-based Daewoo Shipbuilding Engineering Center (DSEC), a subsidiary of the world's third largest shipbuilder DSME. Golden State is the first vessel NASSCO has built under this new arrangement in which DSEC provides the ship design and outfit material for efficient and cost-effective ship construction. DSEC used the blueprints of several similar vessels constructed at DSME's Okpo Shipyard in Korea as the baseline for Golden State. The approach enabled the entire ships design to be completed in less than a year, and more important, five months before the start of construction. Working with its Korean teammates, NASSCO achieved an improved construction cycle over its recent shipbuilding programs. When Golden State departs for sea trials in early December 2008, less than 16 months will have elapsed from full-scale start of construction in August 2006. The M/T Golden State is scheduled to be delivered to U.S. Shipping Partners in early January. Operating under charter to BP, Golden State's primary mission will be to transport refined petroleum products to BP's terminal in the Port of Long Beach, California, from its Cherry Point Refinery in Bellingham, Washington. NASSCO is under contract to build nine product carriers for U.S. Shipping Partners. From innovative contracting and design activity to timely construction and delivery, the M/T Golden State is another Great Ship built by NASSCO. The tanker is constructed for the transport of Petroleum Products, Crude Oil, and easy chemicals, such as Benzene and Toulene. The tanker contains six pairs of cargo tanks, two slop tanks, and wing and double bottom tanks for water ballast. The ships fully loaded capacities of these tanks are as follows: Cargo tanks including slop tanks, approx. 52,750 cu. m.; and Water Ballast tanks including peak tanks 24,200 cu. m.
