Guidelines: YP47 Steel for Hull Structures
Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) released its new "Guidelines on the Application of YP47 Steel for Hull Structures of Large Container Carriers." The first large sized container carrier in the world to use a new grade of higher tensile steel in its hull structure with a specified yield point of 47 kgf/sq. mm (460N/sq. mm) was built to NK class and delivered in June 2007. Known as YP47 steel, this comparatively strong and tough material is currently attracting much attention as an effective solution to the challenges presented by the use of extremely thick steel plates in the construction of the hull structures of container carriers that have been growing ever larger in size in recent years. The publication sets forth comprehensive technical guidelines on the application of YP47 steel, including specifications on the hull girder strength, fatigue strength and other factors affecting hull structural strength, as well as material specifications and requirements for welding procedures, fabrication and related work carried out during construction. The Guidelines also include provisions on brittle crack arrest design that serve as a backup safety measure for preventing brittle fracture in the event of brittle cracking. The guidelines can be downloaded from the ClassNK website at

Fairstar Heavy Transport (FAIR) completed the loading of two topside modules onto its heavy transport ship Fjord at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. (DSME) in Okpo, South Korea, where the two modules have been constructed. "Both modules with an approximate total weight of 11,000 tons, were successfully skidded onto the
Italian shipping company Premuda returned for more SPS Overlay steel reinstatement, this time on board one of its Panamax bulk carriers, the 1984built Four Earth. The 78,000-dwt vessel, classed by Lloyd's Register, was repaired at Cosco Guangdong Shipyard in China. "We have excellent experience of steel reinstatement using SPS Overlay, having used it a number of times on other vessels in our fleet," said Marco Leveratto of Premuda. "There are a range of in-service benefits -- the reinstated surfaces are flatter and last longer because they are more resistant to impact damage, fatigue and corrosion. The Four Earth is the first bulk carrier we have repaired using SPS Overlay and we are very pleased with the result."
