Keel Laid for 3,400 TEU Containership Laid
company Dinastia Jati Sdn Bhd, is for two 40m utility vessels which will be built at Strategic Marine's Singapore yard. The crewboats, which have top speeds in excess of 25 knots, are scheduled for delivery in July and September next year. Strategic recently doubled the size and capacity of its Singapore yard to 2,400 sq. m. to enable it to go ahead with the construction of six speculative 40 m crew boats. Strategic is confident it will sell the other four "on spec" boats it is planning to construct -- two of them 40m vessels to be built in Singapore, and the other two 52m vessels to be constructed at Strategic Marine's recently opened Mexican yard at Mazatlan. Strategic Marine has received orders for 139 vessels over the last two years, with a total contract value of $283m. If contracts are signed for the four remaining "on spec" crewboats, the total value of the company's contracts will rise to more than $300m.

On October 7, the keel of the third containership of the newly developed series of 3,400 TEU container ships was laid (pictured above) at TKMS Blohm + Voss Nordseewerke. According to old custom, coins were nailed onto a block of timber supporting the keel by representatives of the shipping line and the yard. Thereupon, the first double-bottom section weighing 245 tons was placed onto the timber. This ceremony and the christening of the ship when it is launched are to bless the ship and all who sail in her. The ship -- yard #558 -- is being built for Hartmann in Leer, scheduled to be launched in January 2009 and delivered at the end of April 2009. The container ship will be built in compliance with the rules and regulations of Germanischer Lloyd.
