Maritime Reporter Magazine - August 2008 - Page 6
EDITOR'S NOTE On the Cover M y position with Maritime Reporter & Engineering News has afforded me the opportunity for more than 15 years to travel the world and to see and experience things that many people don't even realize exist. I've stood atop some of the largest marine structures ever conceived; I've crawled through the bowels of drilling rigs; I've driven a professional racing boat that looked and handled like a Ferrari; and I've been on an ice breaking mission in the Gulf of Bothnia, to name but a few. Earlier this summer while attending the Multi-Agency Combat Craft conference (MACC 2008) in Virginia, I had one of personal favorite opportunities -- that is to enjoy a really fast, really comfortable ride courtesy of the new Zodiac Hurricane Mach2 RIB. The timing for the visit to MACC and the ride was perfect, as I was prepping for this, our August "Maritime Security" edition. MACC is an excellent exhibition and conference held in Virginia every June, complete with a covered tent exhibition hall and a dock-full of the latest, high-speed, high-tech boats on the market. Zooming along at nearly 60 knots the Zodiac test ride was incredibly tight and comfortable in the hands of our driver, Jake Albinio, the company's New Products Delivery Instructor. This ride and a subsequent conversation with J.J. Marie, president, Zodiac (who incidentally was just honored, being named an "Honorary SEAL" for his longtime commitment and work for the Special Warfare community) drove home the importance of the work being conducted in the maritime community by all designers, builders and suppliers of the latest technology to serve this market. While much of the focus is dedicated to the latest, greatest technology and "dollar and cents" end of the business; it's never been more important to keep your eye on the end user of these products; the men and women who's job, health and life depends in part upon well-designed, well-built and well-maintained systems. This month's Maritime Security coverage includes a report on the aforementioned boat ride, as well two insightful articles from regular contributors: Ned Lundquist files a first-hand report on maritime security surrounding drilling rigs off of Iraq; and Jonathan Waldron and Charles Blocksidge of Blank Rome break down the meaning of the Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2008 and its meaning to Maritime Security.
