Gladding-Hearn Delivers 80-ft. Tug
Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding has built its first tug in more than 15 years. Wilmington Tug has taken delivery of a new 80-ft. shipdocking tug. The Delaware-based towing company's seven-tug fleet includes five boats from the Somerset, Mass., shipyard. The ASD tug, designed by Robert Allan Ltd., measures 80-ft. (24.4 m) overall, with a 32-ft. (9.8 m) beam and 16.7-ft. (5 m) draft. The boat is powered by twin MTU 16V4000M60 diesel engines, each rated 2360 bhp at 1,800

rpm, turning a pair of Rolls-Royce US205MK-2 Z-drives. The power package delivers a bollard pull of 65 tons. An electric Markey DEPC 48, 50-hp winch is mounted on the foredeck, along with a 5-hp Burrard Iron Works capstan, and a 10-hp capstan on the aft deck.
Electrical power is provided by twin 99kW gensets. Additionally, there are two Nabrico barge winches, Viking Marine fendering systems, and a folding mast, operable from the pilot house.

BC Ferry Heads Home
In early May the third double-ended ferry for British Columbia Ferry (BC Ferries) -- Coastal Celebration -- left Flensburger for its voyage from Germany to BC, Canada. All three new vessels of the Super C-Class promote the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, which will take place in Vancouver. Coastal Celebration starts regularly scheduled service from Swartz Bay (Vancouver Island) to Tsawwassen (Mainland) in fall.
