EDITOR'S NOTE On the Cover O ft reported in these pages and on those of our electronic news at Marinelink.com are the industry's MARITIME REPORTER AND ENGINEERING NEWS www.marinelink.com continued -- almost desperate -- need for qualified workers to fulfill current demands and fuel future growth. While the topic is neither new nor surprising, action to date has been remarkably slow in terms of a collective industry or individual corporate response. I'm pleased to see that finally this is changing. Early next month on the MITAGS campus in Linthicum Heights, MD is an innovative and in-depth conference entitled "Maritime and Intermodal Education for Primary and Secondary Schools in America: Onboard to a Future Career," scheduled for April 1-3, 2008. Hosted by the Ship Operations Cooperative Program (SOCP), the conference is unique in that it will attempt to add form and function to efforts to attract this industry's future generation at the grass roots -- early on and in conjunction with the country's primary and secondary schools. For those interested to attend the program, which is packed with a roster of speakers from government, industry and academia, please visit www.socp.us to register. On the corporate side Crowley -- ever the innovator in this marine business -- reports that its new Advanced Engineering Development program is showing signs of early success. The program, part of the company's overall commitment to recruiting, training and retaining a talented workforce, is designed to provide additional career growth to individuals choosing to make their career in the maritime industry. 2 6 14 16 21 38 46 50 59 62 63 65 72 Table of Contents Editor's Note Government Update Finance Report Tanker Trends Eye on the Navy People & Company News Recent Ship Sales New Products Maritime Safety Directory Buyer's Directory Classifieds Ad Index On the Cover: Pictured on this month's cover is are Crescent River Pilots from Louisiana attending the Advanced Shiphandling course at Massachusetts Maritime Academy this fall.
