In the event of fire, such pipes present problems. At a temperature of about 75 oC plastic softens, and spontaneous combustion occurs at around 140 oC. As the plastic softens and ignites, an opening will form and allow the fire and fumes to spread. The RISE/ULTRA system is designed to eliminate this problem. The system has been tested (> 120 minutes) in conformity with EN1366-3:2004 for fire class E120 (flame resistance) and EI120 (flame resistance and thermal insulation). The heart of the system consists of the RISE/ULTRA crusher: a rubber sleeve which is wrapped around the ducted pipe and which will expand when subjected to high temperatures. The transit is sealed at each side with a 20 mm thick coating of NOFIRNO compound, which sets as a rubber having a hardness of 60 Shore A.
