People & Company News Petrobras Selects Platform Design Petrobras selected an Aker Kvaerner design for the hull of its new semisubmersible production platform to be located offshore Brazil, at the Marlim Sul deep water field development. The design is a copy of the P-51 semisubmersible platform, developed by Aker Kvaerner for Petrobras in 2002. P-56 will be the third semisubmersible platform for Petrobras of this design. The new contract covers the additional licence as well as an option for utilizing technical assistance from Aker Kvaerner during the project. first quarter 2010. The second vessel 177,000 dwt -- has been ordered from the SWS yard in China for $115.5 million, scheduled for delivery in December 2008/January 2009. Recently Bocimar reached an agreement in principle with the Australian mining group Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) for the transport of iron ore from Australia to China. The agreement includes the use of two vessels, one for a period of 10 years and one for a period of 5 years, and covers the transport ofapproximately 30 million tons of iron ore. Cascade Wins Contract Cascade General Portland Shipyard, Portland, Ore., won a $9,052,654 firmfixed-price contract for a 70-day post shipyard availability (PSA) of Military Sealift Fleet Support Command's dry cargo/ammunition ship USNS Alan Shepard to undergo a number of modifications that could not be economically accomplished under the ship construction contract. Naval Sea Systems PMS 325 provided funding for the alterations to be completed during the PSA. Bocimar Expands Fleet Bocimar expanded its newbuilding program with the acquisition of two newbuilding Capesize vessels. The first has been ordered from Imabari (Japan), a 180,000 dwt unit for $108m, with delivery expected in the GL Gets Russian Flag Authorization The Russian Maritime Authority has authorized Germanischer Lloyd (GL) to perform statutory duties on ships with Russian flag. Germanischer Lloyd is the very first foreign society to be granted this right. The authorization includes surveys, plan approval and issuance of certificates for international conventions such as SOLAS, Load Line, Colreg, Tonnage as well as MARPOL Annex I, II and IV. Parallel to the authorization of Germanischer Lloyd for the Russian flag, the German flag administration Seeberufsgenossenschaft (See-BG) has approved the Russian Maritime Register. The Russian society is now authorized to carry out surveys on German-flagged ships. The agreement was signed by Alexey Klyavin, Director of State Policy for Maritime and River Transport, Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, and Dr Hermann J. Klein, Executive Board Member of Germanischer Lloyd. Rolls-Royce Inks Deal Rolls-Royce Naval Marine Inc., Walpole, Mass., is being awarded a $7,030,097 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for research and development of Nickel Boron (NiB) Coatings for Naval Propulsion Systems to minimize corrosion. Work will be performed in Pascagoula, Miss., (75 percent) and Stuart, Fla. (25 percent), and work is Alexander Klyavin (left), Assistant Secretary Deputy Minister of Transportation of the Russian Federation, and Dr Hermann J.
